About

The War Within: Dissent during Crisis in America examines issues of war, peace, dissent and dialogue during critical periods in the 20th century when free speech and civil liberties were threatened.

The opening event for the physical exhibit was held on May 31, 2006, and was co-sponsored by the UCI Difficult Dialogues Project. The speakers included Professor Gabriel Schwab, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Manuel Gomez, and University Librarian Gerald Munoff. The War Within remained on display in the Muriel Ansley Reynolds Gallery of UCI’s Langson Library through November 2006.

Most items on exhibit are from the Department of Special Collections and Archives in the UCI Libraries. Steve MacLeod, Public Services Coordinator for the Libraries' Special Collections and Archives, was the exhibit curator. The online version was created by artists Julia Crosara and Sage Kim in the Libraries’ Design Services unit.

A printed checklist containing the full text of the exhibit can be downloaded as a PDF file.
